The essay has become a very important part of the student’s application as more and more colleges no longer allow personal interviews. The essay is the student’s voice. Plan on spending quality time developing your essay and anticipate several drafts! Short answer questions shouldn’t be taken lightly, put lots of thought into them also.
Remember the grandmother rule: You should feel comfortable having your grandmother read your essay!!

Tips from college admissions counselors:
1. Know your competition – Understand the college acceptance rates and remember that when applications rise, so does the bar for admittance.
2. Stand out – Good grades and board scores are essential but they aren’t the total package… participate, volunteer, work and show commitment.
3. Do your homework before writing your essay – The essay should be personal and not generic. This is how they see your personality.
4. Make an immediate impression when being interviewed – Again, personality is key.
