Making visits can help you narrow your focus to certain schools. It can also give you experiences that you can use as part of the admissions process.
Going to see college campuses before you apply can help you refine your list of target schools even further. As a result, you can spend more time on applications to colleges in which you have a genuine and passionate interest. Plus, you can reduce the time and cost involved by not filling out admissions applications for schools that you will have decided against.
Once you have visited the campuses of the schools you are targeting, you may find yourself better prepared to take on college interviews and applications. Personal experiences with college students and professors can help you can describe why you want to attend a particular university, why you are a fit for the school, and what you can contribute academically and socially if admitted. Rising Seniors need to be familiar with these terms:
Rolling-you can apply anytime (some are accepting applications now). You usually find out in 3-6 weeks whether you are accepted, denied, or deferred.
Early Decision-this one is not recommended unless your acceptance is not dependent on financial aid and you have absolutely no doubt that you want to attend the school. If you get accepted you are contractually bound to enroll.
Early Action-your application can be sent by an earlier deadline and you find out your status earlier. There are many advantages to this type. You don’t have to notify the school regarding your decision until the normal May 1st date. This is a great way to get ahead of the process. Worth mentioning, you should research the freshman profile of the most current class to see if your credentials are competitive and weigh whether you have a good chance of being accepted.
Regular Decision-A set date by which your application must be received by the college. This means your application scores in its entirety must be in by this date including the teacher recs, SAT/ACT scores, etc. Most colleges set this date towards the end of the year or the first of the next year.
OF special note: pay particular notice to merit scholarship deadlines and whether you apply for institutional (school specific) scholarships separately or whether your application for admission also serves as your scholarship application. Unfortunately this varies from college to college. Never hesitate to ask questions!!!
